Roger Waters

Roger Waters, born George Roger Waters on 6 September 1943 in Great Bookham (Surrey), is a British musician and singer-songwriter, founding member and bassist of the band Pink Floyd.

Roger Waters was born in Great Bookham, Surrey on September 6, 1943. His father, Eric Fletcher Waters, took part in the fighting in the Second World War and was killed at Anzio in 1944 during Operation Shingle. The trauma of his father's death had a lasting effect on his compositions, particularly on the albums The Wall (1979), The Final Cut (1983) - which was dedicated to him - and Amused to Death (1992).

Roger Waters then lives alone with his mother and two older brothers. It is at Cambridge High School that he meets Syd Barrett and Nick Mason. In 1964, he founds a first group with Richard Wright, Nick Mason, Clive Metcalfe, Juliette Gale (future Mrs. Wright) and Keith Noble, the " Sigma 6 " which will also be called, according to the mood or the inspiration of the moment, " The Abdabs " or " The Tea Set ". Metcalfe and Noble left the band in 1965 and were replaced by Bob Klose and Syd Barrett. Waters, who had been playing guitar until then, became bassist. Eventually, the Tea Set was reduced to five members, Barrett, Klose, Mason, Waters and Wright, then to four after Klose left. They adopted the name "The Pink Floyd Sound" (in reference to Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, two American blues musicians) based on an idea by Barrett. Then after Barrett's departure, David Gilmour takes over and the band evolves, at first with a psychedelic tendency, it becomes more experimental and progressive.
