Lenny Kravitz, born May 26, 1964 in New York, is an American singer, musician, composer and actor.
His compositions mix elements as varied as psychedelic rock, hard rock, rhythm and blues, soul, funk and pop. His influences are multiple and include Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic, John Lennon, Prince, The Jackson 5, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and Led Zeppelin.

In addition to singing and doing backing vocals, he is a complete musician who plays all instruments himself when recording (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and percussion). He won the Grammy Award for "Best Male Rock Performance" four times from 1999 to 2002. His sales are estimated at 381 million albums worldwide.
His mother comes from a Christian family of African-American and Bahamian descent. Her father is of Ukrainian Jewish origin, along with a great-grandfather from Kiev. Through his mother, Kravitz is a second cousin of television weatherman Al Roker because their grandfathers were brothers.

During his early years, Kravitz did not grow up in a religious environment. After a spiritual experience at the age of 13, he began attending church and later became a non-denominational Christian. Kravitz's father was a Green Beret and his uncle, Leonard M. Kravitz, was a first class soldier.

Kravitz was named after Leonard M., who was killed in action during the Korean War at the age of 19 while defending himself against a Chinese attack, saving most of his platoon. Leonard M. was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross but was denied the Medal of Honour. In 2014, he received the Medal of Honour in a ceremony that awarded it to 24 soldiers who died because of their ethnic or religious affiliation. Kravitz grew up spending weekdays on Manhattan's Upper East Side with his parents, attending P.S. 6 Elementary School, and spending weekends at his grandmother Bessie's home in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
